Arthur Samuel MIDDLEDITCH was born in 1892 (Newmarket Q4-1892 3B:486), son of Carrie MIDDLEDITCH who married Harry ROWE in 1893. Arthur
was baptised in St Peter's, Moulton on 5th February 1893, as the
son of Harry and Carrie ROWE (née MIDDLEDITCH). Apparently Arthur and his sister always used the surname ROWE.
1901 census...Aged 8, he was at Brookside, Moulton with his stepfather Harry ROWE [35] stableman, born Newmarket; his mother Carrie [27] and sister Nellie [9] (born MIDDLEDITCH) both born in Moulton. The family name is given as ROE. 1911 census...Aged 18, a farm labourer, he was at Brookside, Moulton with his mother, uncle Ben MIDDLEDITCH [35] labourer, born Moulton and a visitor, Nellie TWEED [11]. He was later at Crooked Cottage, Little Green, and worked for farmer Tommy Camps at Moulton Manor Farm. His father was not found in this census, perhaps already gone to Canada. A Harry Rowe of the right age left Liverpool for Halifax on 16th December 1907. His parents were later of 65 McCaul Street, Toronto, Canada. |

He enlisted in Newmarket. "C" Battery 85th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery was a 4 howitzer battery with the 18th (Eastern) Division. They were in action on the Somme, but their exact position on 18th July has not yet been found, but as Arthur died of his wounds we have no way, without his Army records, of telling when or where he was wounded. No.21 Casualty Clearing Station was at La Neuville, near Corbie, and remained there throughout the 1916 Battles of the Somme, the cemetery was opened early in July 1916. The Brigade was with 18 Division at Bazentin from 14-17 July.
